Every "skip this step" online has a cost, paid somewhere else, by someone who usually isn't you. A closer look at what convenience actually trades away, and why it rarely feels like a trade at all.

It takes four taps to order dinner. Open the app, pick the meal you picked last time, confirm the address that's already filled in, tap pay. Twenty-two minutes later, food arrives. Somewhere in the middle of that twenty-two minutes, it's easy to feel a small, genuine flicker of wonder at how easy that was. Then the phone goes back in a pocket and the moment is gone, unremarked, the way most engineering marvels are once they stop being new.

Nobody thinks of ordering dinner as a transaction anymore. That's precisely the point.

The trade that doesn't feel like a trade

Every convenience has a cost. This isn't a controversial claim — it's just accounting. The interesting question is never whether there's a cost, but where it went, because in most digital convenience, the cost has been moved somewhere the person benefiting from the convenience will never see it.

The four-tap dinner order didn't make the underlying complexity disappear. Someone still has to know your address, your payment details, your ordering history, your general schedule, and increasingly, a predictive model of what you're likely to want before you've decided yourself. That complexity didn't vanish when the friction did. It moved — into a database, into a model, into a business built on knowing you a little better than you know your own patterns.

This is worth sitting with, because it inverts the usual story about convenience. The common assumption is that convenience is a gift technology gives you for free. The more accurate description is that convenience is a service you're paying for, in a currency that doesn't show up on a receipt, priced by someone else, on terms you never got to negotiate.

A short history of what "free" used to mean

Older readers may remember a period, not actually that long ago, when "free" software genuinely meant no money changed hands and nothing else did either. A piece of shareware. A utility someone wrote and gave away. The exchange was simple because there was, for a while, no infrastructure sophisticated enough to make it anything else.

That window closed quickly, and for a good structural reason: once it became technically possible to build a detailed behavioural profile of a person cheaply, at scale, and to sell access to that profile's predictive value, "free" stopped being a straightforward gift and became a different kind of transaction — one where the product being paid for by advertisers was a increasingly accurate model of what you, specifically, are likely to do next.

None of this required any single villain. It required only that the technology to do it existed, that it was profitable, and that almost nobody using these free services had the technical background or spare attention to notice the shift happening underneath a familiar-looking button that still just said "Sign Up Free."

Convenience as a design philosophy, not an accident

It's tempting to think of frictionlessness as a natural byproduct of good engineering — of course things get easier over time, that's what progress looks like. But removing friction from a specific step is always a deliberate choice about which step matters enough to optimise, and optimisation is never neutral. It optimises for something.

Consider the difference between how easy it is to sign up for a subscription and how easy it is to cancel one. This asymmetry is common enough that regulators in several countries have started legislating against it specifically — requiring cancellation to be no harder than sign-up. The fact that this needed a law tells you something: left to design incentives alone, the friction naturally concentrates at the exit, not the entrance, because the business's interests and the user's interests point in different directions at exactly that moment, and only one of them is holding the pen.

This is the deeper pattern worth extracting from any single example: convenience is never evenly distributed across a system. It gets engineered precisely at the points where reducing it benefits whoever's doing the engineering, and left alone — or actively increased — at the points where friction serves them instead.

What gets quietly lost

The cost of convenience isn't usually money, and it isn't usually dramatic. It's smaller and stranger than that. It's the erosion of a certain kind of active attention — the muscle involved in pausing before a decision, comparing options, asking whether you actually want the thing that's now one tap away.

There's a reasonable case that this muscle, like any other, weakens with disuse. A generation that has never had to remember a phone number has, by every account, a measurably different relationship with memory than one that had to. This isn't necessarily a tragedy — offloading memory to a device is in many ways a sensible trade. But it is a trade, and pretending it's simply an unambiguous improvement misses half of what actually happened.

The same logic extends further than most people are comfortable admitting. Decision-making, like memory, seems to atrophy somewhat when it's rarely exercised. A person who has spent a decade accepting the default option — the recommended item, the suggested reply, the pre-filled address — may find, if they ever pause to check, that the part of them responsible for actively choosing has gone a little quiet from disuse. Not gone. Just quiet, the way any capacity goes quiet when a system has been reliably making the choice for you.

Convenience doesn't remove the decision. It just makes the decision on your behalf, quietly enough that you stop noticing there was one to make.

The honest reframe

None of this is an argument against convenience itself, which would be a strange and impractical position to hold in 2026. Nobody is going to start memorising directions out of principle, and there's no virtue in friction for its own sake. The point is narrower and more useful than "convenience bad": the cost of convenience is real, it's usually paid in attention and data rather than money, and it's specifically designed to be invisible at the moment of the transaction.

Given that, the only leverage available to an individual is the same leverage available anywhere costs are hidden: ask where it went. Not for every four-tap decision — that would recreate exactly the exhausting hypervigilance nobody has the bandwidth for. But occasionally, for the services that matter most, it's worth actually finding the answer rather than assuming there isn't one. The answer is very rarely nothing.
